Louis Wain
1860 - 1939
He began contributing black and white drawings to various magazines in 1881 and joined the staff of the Illustrated Dramatic and Sporting News in 1882. In 1886 he moved to The Illustrated London News, where he produced his pictures in the mildly humorous genre of stylised cats in human costumes and situations for which he was to become so famous.
By the turn of the century his name was synonymous with humorous cat drawings and he was producing 600 a year for books, magazines and postcards.
