Tree Fellas

by Nigel Hemming

Limited edition giclee print plus 25 artist remarqued (personalised) copies

The mid-Winter sun struggles to burn off the early mist, which veils the woodland. Three Black Labs, unleashed by their master, rampage joyfully through its shrouded trees. Wood Pigeons, which have roosted over-night amongst the sheltering boughs, are startled into flight by this sudden intrusion. The happy trio pause briefly by a fallen tree, their attention drawn by the anxious wing-claps of the fleeing birds, which echo like pistol shots through the still morning air.

artist biography

Born in 1957, Nigel grew up in the picturesque village of Kinver in Staffordshire. rom an early age Nigel had a keen interest in and initially chose to paint British birdlife.

After leaving school at eighteen, Nigel spent a year at Art College before following a career in teaching. Twelve months into his teaching degree Nigel realised that his passion lay in pursuing a career as an artist and at the age of 21 he turned professional.
In 1982 Nigel married his wife Sue and inherited a cat & a dog and has specialised in painting dogs ever since. Nigel's appreciation, not only of dogs, but more importantly their relationship with their owners, started to grow. As a result his attitude and approach to his work began to change, culminating in a painting entitled "In Retirement". Its combination of pathos, character and narrative ensured that it met with considerable popular acclaim.
For Nigel it represented a turning point in his career which ultimately led to his abandoning any serious desire to paint wildlife. Instead he chose to concentrate on his canine subjects and developed the distinctive style of narrative dog painting that has become the hallmark of his work today. As he says himself, "I try to paint pictures, not simply of dogs, but about dogs.
