Wild Rovers

by Nigel Hemming

Limited edition fine art print

It is late August and the heather bloom tinges the grouse moor purple and blue. Three wonderful Black Labs wait eagerly at their masters Land Rover. The two younger dogs pant in excitement and anticipation, whilst their older companion - more experienced and having been there many times before - lies and waits more patiently. Nigel has, over the past few years, developed a modest reputation for painting Land Rovers. He could include one in many more of his works but feels that their inclusion has to be justifiable. Nigel has decided, therefore, that this will be the last for a while. Mind you, he said that after publishing Four by Four in 2000 and he has painted at least three since then so who knows!! (Coincidentally, this is the same Land Rover that he used in Four by Four).

Tree Fellas

by Nigel Hemming

Limited edition giclee print plus 25 artist remarqued (personalised) copies

The mid-Winter sun struggles to burn off the early mist, which veils the woodland. Three Black Labs, unleashed by their master, rampage joyfully through its shrouded trees. Wood Pigeons, which have roosted over-night amongst the sheltering boughs, are startled into flight by this sudden intrusion. The happy trio pause briefly by a fallen tree, their attention drawn by the anxious wing-claps of the fleeing birds, which echo like pistol shots through the still morning air.

Off Roaders

by Nigel Hemming

Limited edition fine art giclee print

It’s May. The grass is springing high and the bracken fronds are still unfurling but despite the early sunshine there’s a chill in the air. Having been disembarked from the relative comfort of their master’s Land Rover, these two wonderful Springers have found a nice warm spot to await the start of their expedition. This is Tom (black and white) and Sam, two very handsome English Springers. Nigel has often been taken to task over his lack of published images depicting black and white Springers. In his defence he has produced a number but obviously not enough!! Nigel hopes this helps to redress the balance. You can also see Sam, the liver and white, in a more contemporary image as part of my new series ‘Dog Tired’. Click on the link below to view.

Blues & Twos

by Nigel Hemming

Limited edition giclee print of only 50 copies

It’s April and the wood is decked out in its Springtime finery. A vivid new canopy and a stunning carpet of Bluebells. Out for their first run of the day, these two handsome Collies pause briefly on the path, waiting for their mistess to catch up. This image of Storm and Breeze was taken from a commission that Nigel completed towards the end of 2011 and just begged to be published. Not only because the subjects were so appealing but also because Nigel hadn’t published images of Merles before and had been asked for them on many occassions. Nigel hadn’t published an image of a Bluebell wood before, either.

Larger than Life Black Labrador III

by Nigel Hemming

Limited edition giclee print of only 50 copies

As this is the third Black Lab image in Nigel's Larger than Life series he has decided to make a change to its presentation. He has moved away from the square to a rectangular format, in the same proportions as Bloody Weather. Nigel does like the square Larger Than Life format but he also likes to ring the changes and he hopes that you agree. With Labrador II selling out at the end of last year and Labrador I nearly gone, it seemed only right that Nigel continued the series. After all he is known as ‘The Labrador Man.

Larger than Life - Yellow Labrador (on paper)

by Nigel Hemming

Limited edition giglee print

In 2010 Nigel was commissioned to paint the portrait of George, a very handsome and distinguished working Yellow Labrador. George’s owner, Tim and Sally, had previously purchased the original to LTL Black Lab and wanted their portrait of George to match. From the start, Nigel had considered publishing the finished work as he felt that George would make a fine addition to his range of contemporary images. He hopes that you agree.

artist biography

Born in 1957, Nigel grew up in the picturesque village of Kinver in Staffordshire. rom an early age Nigel had a keen interest in and initially chose to paint British birdlife.

After leaving school at eighteen, Nigel spent a year at Art College before following a career in teaching. Twelve months into his teaching degree Nigel realised that his passion lay in pursuing a career as an artist and at the age of 21 he turned professional.
In 1982 Nigel married his wife Sue and inherited a cat & a dog and has specialised in painting dogs ever since. Nigel's appreciation, not only of dogs, but more importantly their relationship with their owners, started to grow. As a result his attitude and approach to his work began to change, culminating in a painting entitled "In Retirement". Its combination of pathos, character and narrative ensured that it met with considerable popular acclaim.
For Nigel it represented a turning point in his career which ultimately led to his abandoning any serious desire to paint wildlife. Instead he chose to concentrate on his canine subjects and developed the distinctive style of narrative dog painting that has become the hallmark of his work today. As he says himself, "I try to paint pictures, not simply of dogs, but about dogs.
